Large Animal Services
A dedicated team of farm animal vets serves the local farming community from our Cullompton and Tiverton Branches.
All aspects of dairy and beef herd health are catered for including reproductive management, embryo transfer, nutrition and feed management, large herds disease dynamics and specialist mastitis advice.
Interests are supported by modern computer programs and relevant IT skills, top quality on farm and laboratory equipment, and good networking with experts in practice and leading research institutes.
Investment in continual training and development, equipment and technology contributes to our high standards of proficiency and in-house laboratory facilities ensure rapid analysis for the monitoring and control of critical health conditions.
Dairy Herd Health Management
We were one of the first practices to establish routine fertility work over 40 years ago and the majority of our work is now pre-planned, proactive healthcare. Advice is from the bottom up. Daily work routines, buildings layout, maintenance diet make up and management are basics to which are added the monitoring of production levels, disease incidence and metabolic disturbance. Our aims are efficient production attained via the very best of animal comfort and care.
Lameness
We treat problems affecting both individual and herd, with locomotor scoring and advice on the prevention of lameness.
Nutrition
Working alongside nutrition advisors, we can assess the quality of diet and animal responses to feeds.
Youngstock
We offer targeted vaccine regimes for prevention and treatment of disease by good management.
Mastitis
The Vale Farm Team offers a full range of mastitis services including detailed analysis of farm milk records with Interherd Plus and Herd Companion. We have a commercial milk laboratory which processes between 1,500 and 2,000 milk samples for bacteriology per month from all corners of the UK. We can arrange ad hoc SCC testing for your cows/herd if you do not regularly milk record. We can offer on farm mastitis consultancy and have trained vets able to perform a DairyCo Mastitis Control Plan on your farm. Embryo Transfer Service
The Vale Veterinary Group has been offering an embryo transfer service to our clients and other farmers in the south west for 15 years. Our ET team is registered to flush and store embryos for both the UK and the export market.
Services we offer include- Superovulation and Embryo recovery programs.
- Following superovulation treatment embryos are recovered 7 days after service.
- Embryo freezing.
- Recovered embryos can be frozen for transfer at a later date, or for sale/export.
- Fresh Transfers.
- Recovered embryos can be transferred fresh into synchronised recipients.
- Embryo export and storage facilities.
- Repeat breeder transfers.
- All farmers get those good cows which just keep on bulling.
- We can implant a low cost embryo into such cows 7 days after a normal service.
- The presence of 2 embryos increases the cows' chances of getting in calf.
Pigs
We have a great depth of experience dating from the early 1970's, involving disease eradication programmes, major changes in management systems, control and elimination of PRRS, PMNS/PDNS etc as well as daily management advice, staff training etc both for indoor and outdoor units.
Artificial Insemination (AI) Service for Sheep Breeders
We offer an on-farm laparoscopic AI service to flocks in the South-West. Fresh or frozen semen can be used both to good effect. The ewes are synchronised using progesterone sponges allowing us to AI the ewes at a "fixed time".
The main benefits are:- You need to invest in fewer rams than would be needed with natural mating - increased ram power.
- As fewer rams are needed, the savings can be spent on a rams with higher genetic potential.
- The use of proven sires can be maximised.
- You can use frozen semen from a reference or syndicate ram.
- As the ewes are synchronised the lambing period is defined allowing for more efficient use of labour.
- A compact lambing period saves labour, simplifying management and enabling a high level of husbandry. This minimises disease, giving you a healthier crop of lambs that are easier to market when finished.
- Can help in the management of a closed-flock policy, maintaining flock health by the reduction of "bought-in" diseases.

A new and exciting field with experience being gained in general management, vaccination programmes, parasite control and skin disease, neonatal care, immune support and nursing proving a rewarding challenge to veterinary and nursing staff.
Infectious Disease Planning and Monitoring
We offer a comprehensive range of services tailored to meet the needs of dairy, beef and sheep clients looking to safeguard their herds/flocks against diseases such as BVD, Leptospirosis, Johnes, IBR, Neospora, and enzootic abortion of ewes.
We have infectious disease testing and monitoring schemes which have been running for several decades. With this wealth of experience and extensive data at our fingertips we are ideally positioned to offer high quality advice for your farm.
In many cases we can arrange for free or subsidised testing for disease surveillance purposes where we work in close partnership with many of the pharmaceutical companies who help fund and manage these schemes. We also use a variety of up to date software to record and monitor your results resulting in a dynamic but planned approach to managing infectious diseases on your farm.
